For about two decades, a technique called LASIK has transformed how millions of people perceive their world. It is not a decision taken lightly with some doing it because their vision is constantly an issue, however, for others they may think they have a problem when they use a computer because of glare and blurred vision. This can be rectified using anti glare glasses or blue-light-blocking glasses instead of surgery if their eyesight is mostly fine. This will need to be discussed first before any surgery takes place as it could be a simple issue to amend. If not, then LASIK may be the way forward.
People use eye drops to slightly irritate the front lens of their eyes, which allows the retina, which is near the centre of the retina, to flex. This stretches the lens, removing what amounts to the depth of focus normally created by the natural curvature of the human eye.
The result is called bifocal vision, and you may be able to see objects at a far distance without moving your head – although you won’t be able to see anything in the central part of your field of vision.
The process is painless and usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The eye is refreshed, and you can return to your regular life as if nothing had happened. Last month, Alimamy Fofana went under the laser for his first treatment. Fofana’s father came home from a trip to Cameroon in Africa the day before he was set to take off for school in Florida. While they were packing, he saw his son struggling to read the letters on a box of cereal. Fofana’s vision in his left eye had been going out, which caused him to miss a couple of days of school a few weeks earlier.
Fofana’s parents called a doctor, and she suggested laser eye surgery. “My eyesight is about as good as it could be without the surgery,” says Fofana. “My family has seen that I have gotten much better vision since I’ve started using the laser.”
In March, the 17-year-old will graduate high school and plans to attend Florida Atlantic University. “I have many visual experiences each day, so having an improved vision is beneficial for me,” says Fofana.
Once you are diagnosed with refractive astigmatism, your optometrist will try laser eye surgery first, explains Marc Steinman, a New York City-based doctor who performed Fofana’s procedure.
In the simplest case, an optometrist will shape a bifocal lens that distorts your vision a little bit, like so: “The doctor is like the lens maker, but he’s putting the cornea inside the lens so he can do the shaping,” says Steinman.
Using the sclerosed type of lens that he used on Fofana, Steinman can turn Fofana’s blurry vision into a clear one – for $1,300, plus $90 to replace the lens that had been broken in the initial procedure.
People who have cataracts, but no other medical problems, can opt for LASIK as well. About 15 percent of the people who come to Steinman’s office for the procedure also need cataract surgery afterward.
And even after undergoing surgery, your vision isn’t perfect: The surgeon can’t repair every discrepancy in your vision. So, you have to wear an eyeglass prescription for the rest of your life.

That said, laser eye surgery isn’t suitable for everyone. Steinman says people who are near-sighted and have astigmatism will probably not do as well with the procedure, which is also more invasive and costly than ordinary cataract surgery.
